As the African proverb states, “It take a village to raise a child”; the entire community must take responsibility for educating our youth. SEM Link believes we can't make providing educational opportunities for our youth, the sole responsibility of schools. That is why SEM Link was founded and our mission as an organization is to enhance the resources for math and science education at schools and community organizations. We invite you to become a part of the SEM Link village. We are committed to promoting student achievement and career exploration in math and science for K-12 students.
We recognize that there are undergraduate students, graduate students, professionals and retirees with a diverse set of knowledge and expertise that are willing and able to help us achieve our mission. However, our volunteer opportunities aren’t limited to those with science, engineering and mathematics (SEM) backgrounds or those who live in Metropolitan Atlanta. We have a diverse set of opportunities that will allow you to donate your time and talent to promote students achievement and career exploration in math and science. We value our volunteers with SEM backgrounds as they pass on their passion and expertise for math and science. Additionally, individuals that don’t have SEM backgrounds can assist us with event coordination, fundraising and other aspects of our programming and operations. SEM Link can’t achieve its mission in the community without people who donate their time and talent to help us “unveil potential through exposure”; so consider helping us in one or more of the following capacities:
Administrative Volunteers will assist the organization with administrative tasks based on their areas of expertise and interest. The administrative tasks can include advertising and marketing, event coordination, fundraising, financial management, public relations, etc.
Career Exploration Activity Leaders will participate in career exploration activities such as hands-on activities that introduce students to math and science, career fair exhibitions or other career exploration activities.
Math and Science Fair Judges will serve as a judge for school, district, and regional fairs. The fairs usually require judges to serve for at least one full day, but no more than two days.
Math and Science Fair Project Mentors will serve as individual or group mentors for a math or science fair project. Mentors will teach students how to design and conduct an experiment for a math or science fair project. SEM Link has principles of experimental design guide that teaches student lab, research and scientific literacy skills.
Science Café Discussion Leaders will lead a discussion for the general public about a real world application of science, engineering and mathematics. This discussion will include a 5-10 minute Nova Science Now video segment, a 10-15 minute informal lecture by discussion leader, and 30-45 minute discussion period with audience.
